Proverbs 19:8 says, "He who gets wisdom loves his own soul; he who cherishes understanding prospers." Give me understanding over wisdom, Lord.
The world seeks after wisdom, and people who are wise are held in high regard. We are impressed by those who are knowledgeable about geography, foreign languages and cultures, statistics, history, politics and science. But God makes it clear in His Holy Word that wisdom is not what we should seek, as it could easily lead to pride. Even if it doesn't lead to pride, wisdom only helps our human nature, not our spiritual natural. Wisdom fills us with impressive knowledge, but what can knowledge truly do for us as people seeking after God and His purpose for our lives? The Bible makes it clear that understanding is what we should be seeking. And understanding comes from nothing other than a deep spirituality, or what used to be called, piety - setting aside time with God our Father each day to pray and to reflect on His Word.
Isaiah 30:15 - In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength. It was common for God's people (and for Jesus) to withdraw into solitude in order to draw closer to God. Surrounded by personal quietness and peace of God, they were better able to face the challenges and opportunities awaiting them. In the business and noisiness of today's culture, finding time to give our undivided attention to God is crucial, for it is in those moments we are reminded again of what is ultimately important in life. To grow spiritually is to live more and more out of awareness that God is in the center of our lives. True spirituality will come to expression in grateful living with qualities such as compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, contentment and peace.
